Founder's Message

30 Years Designing for People

Ideate • Innovate • Impact

As we celebrate thirty years of Concept i, I look back with enormous pride, gratitude and excitement at the extraordinary journey our practice has taken.

Since founding Concept i in Bangkok in 1996, we have believed that every great project begins with a powerful idea—and that every powerful idea begins with understanding people. That belief is embedded in our name, where the "i" represents our enduring commitment to Ideate, Innovate and Impact—a philosophy established years before the iPhone transformed the meaning of the letter "i" around the world. While technology has evolved dramatically over the past three decades, our philosophy has remained remarkably constant.

When we first established Concept i, the vision was both ambitious and unconventional. From a modest shophouse in the heart of Bangkok, we set out to create an internationally focused multidisciplinary design studio at a time when the regional design profession was still evolving rapidly and many of today's opportunities did not yet exist.

Those early years were exhilarating. We were building not only a new practice, but a culture of collaboration. We invested heavily in mentoring young Thai designers alongside international team members, always believing that diverse perspectives produce stronger ideas. From the beginning, we looked beyond local boundaries, competing with established international firms and embracing projects across cultures, disciplines and continents.

Every project win felt deeply personal. Every success belonged to the whole team. Architects, interior designers, graphic designers, landscape architects, lighting designers and creatives gathered around tables overflowing with somtam, gai yang, khao niao and Singha beer. We were energetic, curious and perhaps a little unconventional—and I believe that spirit continues to define Concept i today.

Over the past thirty years, our profession has experienced one of the most remarkable periods of transformation in history. We have progressed from drawing boards and hand sketches to Building Information Modelling, immersive visualisation and artificial intelligence. Sustainability, wellbeing and digital technologies have reshaped not only the way we design, but also what people expect from the places we create.

Yet through every stage of that evolution, one belief has remained constant.

Great design begins with people.

Before we consider form, materials or technology, we ask one simple question:

How will this enrich people's lives?

Over the years, we have come to realise that our philosophy follows a remarkably simple path.

It begins with People First Design.

It grows through Designing for Experience.

Ultimately, its greatest reward is measured in something wonderfully human—

a smile.

Whether we are designing a children's learning environment, a workplace, a retail destination, a luxury resort or an entirely new urban district, our ambition remains the same: to create places that genuinely enrich the lives of the people who experience them.

Along the way, we have also learned that the best ideas are rarely created by one discipline alone. They emerge through curiosity, collaboration and the willingness to look beyond the brief. Every project has reinforced our belief that remarkable places are created by remarkable teams working towards a shared vision.

One lesson has become clearer;

Great design is never measured by square metres. It is measured by the lives it enriches.

By understanding the complete human journey, we create places that inspire, strengthen communities, support successful businesses and stand the test of time. Commercial success is not the starting point; it is the natural outcome of creating places that people genuinely value.

Looking back, I am proud not only of the projects we have delivered, but also of the values we have remained true to. None of this would have been possible without the trust of our clients, the creativity of our collaborators and the dedication of every member of the Concept i team, past and present.

As we look towards the future, our tools will continue to evolve, our cities will continue to change and artificial intelligence will undoubtedly reshape the way we imagine, design and deliver projects.

Yet one truth will remain unchanged.

People will always be at the heart of great design.

That belief guided our first thirty years.

I have every confidence it will guide our next thirty.
